Lions Club holds annual Christmas Project

Nogales Lions Club with the aid of many other organizations woke up early December 4, 2011 to bring the spirit of the holidays to 100 children in need.
The project in its 38th year began with children and volunteers shopping worth more the $80 for clothing at J.C. Penney and new shoes from Bracker’s Department Store. The project continued with breakfast provided by McDonald’s, courtesy of LeAnn Richards.
The children also were provided with toys and a food baskets, worth about $350, loaded with provisions that included beef and turkeys provided by the Santa Fe Ranch and the Nogales Community Food Bank. Border Echo Magazine, Walmart Supercenter, the City of Nogales and the Horne Ford Auto dealership were also outstanding donators. Many other organizations, businesses and local produce companies also donated to the project.
The Nogales Lions Club who has sponsored the project said that the support has grown over the years and the donations have increased steadily. “We have gotten tremendous support, especially from the Lions Clubs from Green Valley and La Canoa,” said Manuel Montano, project chairperson.
“The project has grown and continues to grow, many of our own members contribute about $250 to the project and I am extremely grateful to Maria Sedgwick and Arthur Espinoza who have grown the food aspect of our project immensely,” said Nogales Lions Club President David Ramirez Matus.
The children are selected by the Nogales Unified School District and cross-referenced by the club to ensure that children who are chosen are in need of the help.
